Keynote: “Sharing case formulation as a therapeutic process in cognitive therapies”
We make the assumption that case formulation is the main operating tool of cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT), not merely the first step. CBT therapists actually use case formulation to manage the entire psycho-therapeutic process. It is used for specific CBT techniques as well as for aspecific interventions, such as the therapeutic alliance. In our presentation we describe how case formulation is a procedure constantly shared between patient and therapist from the beginning to the end of the CBT treatment and we suggest that sharing case formulation is increasingly becoming the distinguishing feature of CBT approaches. It actually implies a full confidence in patients’ conscious agreement, transparent cooperation and explicit commitment with CBT’s model of clinical change. Our presentation also illustrates the preliminary validation data of the LIBET (Life themes and plans Implications of biased Beliefs: Elicitation and Treatment) project, a case formulation procedure, which integrates cognitive and developmental assessment.
